1 Samuel 16:1 – 28:19
As we read about the rise of David, we also see the fall of Saul. It’s an interesting contrast. A contrast between jealousy and mercy.
God changed Saul’s heart, but Saul habitually disobeyed God’s command. The end result being that Saul lost God’s favor. Instead of being humbled before the Lord because of his sin, Saul was continually unfaithful and became fearful and jealous of David.
David was humble before the Lord and considered his anointing in the proper perspective. He was gracious and showed respect to Saul, David consistently gave God the glory for everything that happened.
The first time David spared Saul’s life, Saul makes the following statement:
1 Sam 24:17 “You are more righteous than I, he said, you have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.”
In this exchange righteousness corresponds to how we treat other people. And the only righteousness we have is that which is given to us by Jesus.
If we live in disobedience to God, we become jealous and fearful of those around us. We become incapable of showing mercy because we are not in a perfect relationship with God. And when were not in fellowship with God, our sinful nature takes over. We become Saul, trying to protect what we think is ours.
If we live in obedience to God, we allow God to handle the situations in our life, even those that cause us great pain and distress. Our intimate fellowship with God constantly reminds us of His righteousness and mercy. The mercy shown to us through Jesus, and the righteousness given to those that believe because of His sacrifice. And when we our faithful in our relationship with God, mercy naturally flows from our spirit. We become David, showing mercy to those around us.
Caution: When our mercy meter gets low, something is wrong in our relationship with Jesus.
Solution: Have daily scheduled maintenance
Result: Mercy overflows!
